Ted Bundy Is Best Known As Arguably The Most Cunning And...
Ted Bundy is best known as arguably the most cunning and infamous serial killer of the 20th century. There were a multitude of factors that may have shaped Bundyââ¬â¢s mind, personality, and actions, ranging from struggling with addictions during his childhood all the way to emotional distress around the time when he killed Ann Marie Burr, the first of his many victims. There is, however, one concept of Bundyââ¬â¢s personality that may have especially been influential on his decision to commit his heinous crimes. There is strong evidence that argues that this particular personality facet, the unconscious shadow, may have had the strongest impact on Bundyââ¬â¢s life and behavior. According to the psychiatrist Carl Jung (1981), the shadow of oneââ¬â¢s personality is defined as ââ¬Å"that hidden, repressed, for the most part inferior and guilt-laden personality whose ultimate ramifications reach back into the realm of our animal ancestorsâ⬠(paragraph 221). The sha dow is the unconscious part of the personality that reflects some of our animal instincts and impulses derived through evolution, such as desiring sex, status, or resources. It can also be a source of more positive compulsions, such as those that inspire creativity. The shadow may be a part of what Carl Jung called the ââ¬Å"collective unconsciousâ⬠since the inner shadow is something that we derived from our ancestors.
